Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

credit collection

A third party collection agency purchased an old bofa account and just sent me a letter from one of their affiliated law firms telling me they were going to garnish my wages and that a judgement had been made against me. First off, I was never served with any court documents other than something that came via normal post. Of course, like an idiot I completely ignored it assuming it was bogus because the debt was 4 years old. I am really in a jam ans have know idea what to do about this now that it has gone this far. Please help if you can.
