financial obligation?

I know the ethical answer, but I'm not convinced of the legal answer..

If a company pays me twice on one invoice and then finds the mistake months later, do I have a LEGAL obligation to repay them for the double-payment?

Yes. You received the second payment as an involuntary trustee and you have a legal obligation to hold this money in trust for the rightful owner. This is known as the law of Restitution.
