Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

My question in on behalf of my son, who doesn't have regular net access (he's a truck driver.) His wages are being garnished. The problem is that he doesn't know what this is for! His company is a division of another company, and they are trying to track down the actual garnishment order. He thinks that it might be for an old student loan, that went through several hands before he lost track of it. We've tried searching for "garnishment OR wage attachment" in the three states he has lived in over the last ten years, and in the state that the collection agency is incorporated in, and come up with nothing. Is there some other way that we can search, to find out what it might be? He wants to pay the bill, but needs to know where it ultimately went to, if it is the old student loan, or what it is if that's not it. Thank you.

He can contact the sheriff's department to whom the levy is being paid. It will have the paperwork that will allow your son to identify the levying party, the case name, case number and court. Then, he could check with the court to figure out why the order is in place.
