Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Returned Movie Rental Disagreement

I went to rent a movie one night, but found out that I still had a movie out. I turned it in; I even have a witness (my roommate). The employee checked the shelf, but it was not there. Even if I hadn't remembered turning it in, I have moved out of my house and the movie did not turn up. I have been sent to collections with a bill over $100. I have spoken to the manager many times and she wants me to wait until they do inventory, but if they don't find it, I am responsible for the lost movie. The night I found all of this out, the employee at the counter said, ''this happens often. The manager usually writes it off.'' Do I have any options other than to pay for a movie I know I turned in?
