Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

How can I stop wage garnishment other than bankruptcy

My wages are being garnished a whopping 25% which is draining me so bad I can't even afford to file for bankruptcy, can I stop the garnishment on a legal technecality? For example what would happen if I was fired ,layed-off or just quit my job and got another one or even went back to the same job, would the garnishment follow me???????? I was thinking of asking my boss to lay me off for a week or two if the garnishment would stop. Or is there any other way to stop or reduce the garnishment???? Would appreciate any suggestions, thanks.
