Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

I was detained for 3hrs, before the cops decided to arrest me. I was sat outside of friends house, while they searched the house. After finding nothing, they decided to arrest me for under the infl. of contrld sub. The search took only 1/2 hr. The rest of the time, they talked to each other. Is there a time limit on detaining someone, before they know what they're being arrested for?

There is no specific time limit but the question is whether at some time during that three hour period you were arrested. It is not clear from your question whether you were arrested and whether it will make a difference if you were arrested. You need a lawyer. Preferably you should hire a lawyer right away. If you can't when you go to court a lawyer will be appointed for you. Tell the lawyer everything that happened in that three hour period and its possible that the lawyer will find a defense to the charges.

Good luck.
