Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Am I entitled to a copy of my police report?

I was cited for shoplifting. I went to

the police dept and asked for a copy

of my police report prior to my court

date to help me decide about about a

prvt atty vs public defender (1st

offense). I completed the require

forms but the next day, a policeman

called me and told me I could not

have a copy until my court

appearance. Is this right?

Unfortunately, I do not believe you have any specific legal right to obtain copies of the police report prior to your court date. Police often will give it to you but if they do not want to I do not think you can force them.

You can always start with a Public Defender and substitute in a private attorney later.

Feel free to contact me if you need to consult a private attorney in Suthern California.
