Is it possible to ask a judge for fine reduction for a rehab'd drug offender?

Over the last 4 years, my nephew (now age 23) went through some bad times and got in trouble twice for 11550 (under influence of a controlled substance) and once for possession of a controlled substance. In doing so, he amassed nearly $8,000 in fines. His mom (my sister) committed suicide last year (1/19/07) and that finally triggered him to get his act together. In less than a week he'll be graduating from a 9-month treatment program where he also successfully completed a culinary program so he can find employment when he's done. My question is: Is there any chance or legal precedent of asking the judge to reduce some of his fines so they're not so overwhelming and overbearing once he tries re-entering society as a productive and law abiding citizen?

He can ask for anything he likes, through motion and court appearance on each of the cases. If he convinces the judge[s] that he deserves a break, he might get one.

He needs to make a motion in front of a judge. Always worth a shot. Big factors will be the reasons for the fines and whether your nephew has been on good behavior.
