Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Indigent clients and attorneys. Recently, I lost my job and my attorney was contracted for 10,000 for a defense of me at a criminal proceeding in California. Unfortunately, i have run through my savings and funds over this period and she is owed 2000 dollars for the remainder of my balance before trial. I cannot come up with the remaining funds, and I was told that my attorney cannot drop me from this case and that the courts will actually pay her for the services to be rendered b/c I am now indigent....is this the case, and what are my recourses if she does not continue with the case...

thanks

The lawyer you have now, in all likelyhood cannot get off your case. I do not think a judge would allow it as it might prejidice your case. However the judge may allow your attorney to be appointed by the court if it is made aware of the financial problems you have and it would seriously impact the lawyer to put in many hours on your case without be paid for their services. I wish you well.
