Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

I just recieved a "Notice of Complaint Filed" by the D.A., for 666/484(a)/488 Pc Theft w/prior conviction (I have to appear to enter a plea). Back in September, I went to get my hair done at a salon in Costa Mesa. The girl who did my hair, ruined my hair. A horrible cut and non-requested orange highlights. Before she could finish the cut, I got up and left and didn't pay. I was extremely upset with what she did. A few days ago, I get this "Notice" of theft. I didn't steal anything. Its a service. If I were to paint someone's home and did a horrible job I wouldn't get paid. I'd have to take them to small claims. Isn't this the same thing? Can they do that? What do I do? I cant afford an attorney. Please any and all advice is very welcome.

P.S. Prior conviction was when I was 18, Im 34 now. Short story, Did what public defender said and now have a conviction, charge-PC 148 5A on my record.

Your situation is sort of off-key. Perhaps the salon reported that you stole something as well as skipped out on the bill. If you can't get a lawyer before the appearance, enter a NOT GUILTY plea. Then get a lawyer to handle the matter as well as take steps to get that prior expunged and off your record.

Your best bet is to find a lawyer in your area to appear on your behalf. If you cannot afford one, you should obtain the services of the public defender. Don't assume it's a cut and dry (no pun intended) situation. If someone is angry at you, it is not unlikely they may have lied to make to get the police to pay attention to the situation. Didn't we already answer your question a day ago? Yes, we did. If there is anything worse than a person who doesn't listen to good legal advice, it is someone who sneaks around and tries to get more free legal advice. I hope you call all of the above solicitors, who may be more than happy to take your money. Do they care about your best legal interest? No, but they will be more than happy to take your money.
