Legal Question in DUI Law in California

Can I serve jail time to pay off my fines? These fines will be incurred from my second DUI offense in California. I am well aware I will receive a mandatory jail sentence. My question is can I serve additional time to pay off the astronomical fines I am bound to incur? I will live and will be sentenced in Ventura County California

The answer is MAYBE. The answer depends on the negotiations between your attorney and the D.A. In many instances our office has been able to convert most of the fines to community service. However, some courts are no longer allowing this, as they know the jail time will be less due to good-time credits and the state is broke. But it should be attempted. Also know that no-one can go to jail if they CAN'T PAY...only if they won't pay. I wish you well. David Wallin
