Legal Question in Family Law in California

cohabitation laws and legal rights

My fiance and I decided to move in together, the reason were due to economics..we were both paying rent, utilities, etc and two could live cheaper together than apart. We rented a home and both moved agreeing to slit all expenses 50/50. We moved in on july 7th. we split the deposit, each paid 1/2 julys rent. But on aug 10th my ex asked me to leave, i did. when i returned on the 13th to p/u my things she asked for the keys back, i said until i got all my things i was going to keep them. When i went back on the 16th she had changed the locks and said if i entered the home i was trespassing and she would call the police. The P,G&e was in my name but we verbally agreed to split the bill. Julys bill was over 350 which she said she would pay me the next check she got..but in the meantime i was asked to leave on the 10th of aug and had service transfered to her name but when the closing bill came it was another 300. I also asked that since i paid 1/2 the rent for aug but was only there 10 days i was entitled to prorate the amount i owe and get reimburesed the difference, appx $300. I also asked for the engagement ring be returned but she refuses. she did break off the engagement twice before and returned it both times. Can i sue her or not

Re: cohabitation laws and legal rights

You can sue anyone. The real question is can you win. The answer to your question will depend to a large extent upon the reason why you were told to leave. If she ejected you because of domestic violence, you chance to win is probably slim.
