Buy and read the Nolo Press book on divorces to see how to handle your own divorce. If neither of you have any real assets and no children, then the two of you probably can handle the divorce by yourselves.

Depending on the county in which you live, many courts have attorneys on the staff to give legal assistance and to teach classes on filing divorce paperwork. Often, if there is nothing that the two of you are contesting, with a couple of appointments, you should be able to knock it out yourself. Also, if you look on the website for your county's court, eg. Superior Court of California, County of . . . . . . you should be able to find a link to doing the basic filing on your own. Good luck!
