Even paying the demanded amount will not guarantee that the store will not file criminal charges against you. I advise clients to have their attorney initiate negotiations with the store for a civil compromise agreement that would guarantee no charges were filed. The store can not make that offer to you, because it would be 'extortion', but your attorney can make it to them.
