Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Help with a contract suit

I loaned $ to my best friend to be payable at a certain date at which time she knew it was all I had for rent. She refuses to pay it back, though she knows that my daughter and I lost our rental due to her non payment. She will not contest the loan, but will refuse to pay. She lives in Oregon. I cannot go there to file in small claims.

I want to file suit so that it is in legal record. I wrote a demand for payment letter. She refused. I went to Legal Aid in Marin. I am eligible income-wise, but they do not handle loans. The lawyer there was kind enough to write another demand for payment letter asking for payments to me. She refuses.

What I am hoping for is that there is a lawyer in Marin County who handles cases on a sliding scale? Or allows payments? Thank you

Where you bring suit all depends on where the contract was entered into. If the amount was under $5,000, you could bring an action in small claims court in Marin if that's where the contract was agreed upon. You don't need an attorney to appear in small claims court. Good luck to you!
