Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Golf cart accident

My 14 year old son was driving a golf cart in front of our house. The golf cart belongs to a neighbor. This same neighbor's 18 year old son threw a basketball at my son while he was driving the cart, causing him to swerve into our parked vehicle. Our car insurance covered our damages. Are we responsible to pay for damages caused to the golf cart since it never would have happened had the neighbor's son not thrown the basketball? Since my son who was driving is a minor and not on our auto policy, it isn't covered through our auto insurance and we rent our home with no renters policy.
