Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Left previous company, company then sued me personally as well as new company in a civil suit. The recruiter who brought me over verbally said to myself and another employee that they would pay for my legal representation (paid the filing fee as of now) but has now been non committal on my attorney. By paying the filing fee for me and the other employee, does that legally show they are on the hook for paying our attorney fees?

No. It just means they paid the filing fee. It is not clear what was filed and who filed it. Your attorney should be working this out, and not you.
