Mechanic treated to lien my vehical............

Hello, about 2 months ago my car wasnt running right so i brought it the mechanic ( AAmco )and after 4 days he found nothing wrong with it, i picked it and up and it didnt shift into gear so i returned to the same garage! next day the mechanic called and told me that the transmission is broken!!! and the bill was $2500 !! i told him that i didnt have that kind of money. After talking with them we came to a mutal agreement which i was to pay $400 amonth till it was paid off and they kept the vehical, at that time it would have been paid off by end of November 2004 however i missed a payment and the manager called and said ''that this isnt going work out and for me to call'' i explained to him that i had to pay back property taxes and i cant affort to pay him $400 instead i can pay $250 he said that ''he might have to put a lien sale on the vehical''!! Can he do this ? if so what can i do to protect this sale ? also the title of my car is on a collatrall for a loan throught my 401K loan what to do! Thank you

When you take a car to a repair shop in CA they have to give you an estimate in writing. If I were you I would contact the Bureau of Automotive Repair, you can find them thru www.ca.gov . Good luck!
