Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

If someone pays a bill for you, you offer to pay him back.

He says dont w0orry about it, then moves in with you practicly rent free

then 7 months later you break up and he wants his money, then another 7 months he brings it up again makes me fill bad for him, yet im a single mom livving check to check, so i tell him i will try to pay something, nothing in writing.

He states he has to sale one of his cars, I ask him are you saling your house boat He bought before we broke up, he says no way. please can he get the money because i was weak and said on the phone I would try to pay him back

From what you have said, it appers that he never said you did not have to repay him. Normally the Statute of Limitations on an oral contract is 2 years, but that period starts from the date of the transaction or the date last promised to pay. So you seem to hae renewed the 2 year term. If you told him that he was going to have to pay rent to, you, then have a case against him, but if you did not mention it then you are out of luck. I do not know if saying that you would try to pay back some of the money would limit you to a partial payment; I suspect that it renews the entire debt because no one knows what part you agreed to repay so the entire sum must be included.
