Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

If a person loses an unlawful detainer suit as the defendant, and they are on public aid, and have no job. Do they tell this to the judge in court as he is passing on his judgment? I read being on public aid and informing the judge about this, makes them issue a different kind of judgment when it comes to the plaintiff getting money back from the defendant since the defendant currently has no source of income and depends on the government.
