i recived a substitution of attorney in a civil matter regarding an ol American express debt that's over 6 years old

The substitution of attorney form tells you that the attorney has changed, in a lawsuit. If you didn't know there was a lawsuit pending, I suggest that you look up the case, on line. The name of the court and the case number should be on the substitution of attorney form.
