Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Is there a way to get an unlwaful detainer off my record that happened in 2008 when I was only 19? I can't pass a background ck for a govenrment job. The eviction was unfair from the beginning & I sought legal help from the legal aid society at the time, but they said Legally the mgt could evict me unless I pd there $3000. I was evicted during winter break from the new mgrs of Off campus student housing, despite notfiing them in advnace that I would be paying rent late along with late fee as I was out of town for winter break, and had paid the rent late several times before in this same manner. The posted the eviction notice on my door on 12/8/08 according to the notice & I notifed them on 12/3/08 that I would be paying late, I returned on 12/14/12 , found notice, went to rental office pd rent & late charges & 1 wk later they returned my uncashed check, demanding $3000 legal fees since the time to object had since passed. They never did this before but chose to do this to multiple residents during this Winter break. We all felt this was a predatory assault on naive college students as we did not know what else to do. They even locked me out of the apt before I could move. Legal aid socety advised me to just move, so I did. I had not heard anything further about it nor received any further law suit paperwork, until this background ck now.

Records are forever, that is why they make them - to keep. This default and judgment is too old for you to set aside. You get to live with it now. Keep your credit otherwise excellent and it won't affect you too badly. Try to submit to prospective employers a copy of the court file showing this was a default which you didn't know about, and now can't do anything about.

You can't erase a civil case, but I am surprised that the government thinks having an eviction on your record is a big deal. You are not a criminal.
