Before going abroad, you can apply for a permanent resident re-entry permit. Depending on what company you will be working abroad, there could be some additional preventive measures that can be taken prior to going for your overseas assignment.

As stated by the previous response, if you are traveling abroad for over a year, you will require a re-entry permit. However, keep in mind, a re-entry permit does not preserve residence status for a Green Card Holder for naturalization purposes.

If you are plan on obtaining U.S. citizenship in the future, then a N-470 will need to be filed prior to your departure. This form is for Green Card Holders who must travel outside the U.S. for work, but wish to preserve their residence status for naturalization purposes.

An experienced immigration attorney can help you with both the re-entry permit as well as the Application to Preserve Residence Status.
