Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California

I work for a design agency and design logos, brochures, etc. Can I show the work that I designed in my portfolio to get another job? The design agency owner is refusing to approve showing some of the designs I have created. In this business you have to show your design portfolio to get a job.

As I understand copyright law, it prevents copying of someone else's work, but doesn't prevent showing it, at least for this purpose. If you are lawfully in possession of the designs (which is another issue, to be sure), I don't see why you couldn't show them to others, but you could not copy them or allow them to be copied.
