Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California

I have been working as an independant contractor doing computer drafting for an architect. Do I own the electronic files that I created or does the architect. We have no contract. He pays an hourly rate for drafting services only?

Unless you have a written contract providing you the ownership, you don't. He who pays, owns.
