Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

I was illegally evicted over a year ago- I am almost 100% sure of this. Quick explanation: My rent was 2 weeks late. The management company decided they would "effective immediately" (not in my lease) incur a $600 "legal fee" to my late rent - which was half the amount of my total rent making it impossible for me to pay my rent. Aside from that...at the time the fees were added (the 15th of the month) there were NO FEES YET incurred! So they charged me a fee for a potential eviction...the fee caused the eviction! Please help if possible. At the time I was so frantic and disturbed...and it happened so fast, I was pretty "paralyzed" didn't know what to do, couldn't afford a lawyer and was evicted. I still to this day have no apartment - it has effected my entire mental state...I still can't believe they were able to get away with this. What if anything can I do??

in other words.....

There was a $600 fee added after 2 weeks of late rent. My rent would not be accepted without this fee. At the time there were no fees in existance - no process was started, no eviction process...there were no real legal fees at the 2 week or even 3 week mark.

The problem with your situation is the timing. There is always the possibility that a court could make a mistake, but your remedy is to appeal the decision. Your waiting more than a year makes an appeal untimely.
