can my landlord do this

My wife and I just gave our 30 day notice and the landlord wrote us back telling us to pay the full months rent even though our 30 days is up before our rent is due

I don't understand the issues. If today's the 28th, and you told the landlord you're leaving on the 27th of November, then there are 3 days in November left. Are you disputing that you should pay for the remaining 3 days of November? If so, then the answer is yes, you must pay for the entire month if you're on a month-to-month lease and rent is due the 1st of the month.
