In California, does an attorney have to give advance notice of a lawsuit? If so, how many days?

Only in medical malpractice cases is any notice required. The law provides that plaintiff notify the doctor of 'intent to sue' so that settlement without suit can be discussed. That notice when given before the one year statute of limitations, extends it by up to 90-days.
