Legal Question in Personal Injury in California

Did I commit slandrer? Will I go to jail?

Ex friend was ''slandered'' on local public forum. I contributed to 2 posts. never used her name in post. what i did was verify the posts already on the forum. That was 2 months ago. ''Slandered'' person has a lawyer. I stayed cool but got so enraged again. I sent anonymous email to her current roommate. It was 2(Two) lines long and told her not to ''get had'' by the cost of the rent. She said that she forwarded my email to the attorney. Yeah, now I'm pissed at myself, but what can happen to me. Qestions: How long does it take to trace these anonymous emails to me? How much time can I do for my email and posts? Do I need a lawyer since she has one?

From what you said, it does not sound like you did anything for which they can sue or prosecute you. If you get contacted by the attorney, you may with to contact an attorney

It is difficult to ascertain from the "facts" you stated, the exact situation. However, the fact that the other person has an attorney involved may lead to them filing a lawsuit against you. This will be a civil suit, and you cannot go to jail for it. It may be prudent to seek legal counsel to prepare for, or preempt any potential legal action. If you are in the area and would like further consultation, please feel free to contact our office.

Re: Did I commit slandrer? Will I go to jail?

from the facts given so far, if slander is the only complaint, this would be merely a civil action rather than a criminal matter. thus, you would not have to worry about any jailtime under the factual circumstances you highlighted so far. however, you may have civil liability depending on what was said, written, etc...in this case, you may definitely want to retain an attorney if the "slandered person" has already done so in order to "balance the playing field" more or less. if you would like further legal assistance and/or representation in this matter, email me directly with more specific information regarding your case, especially in respect to what was said or written to warrant "slander allegations" on your part.

Re: Did I commit slandrer? Will I go to jail?

Thank you for your posted inquiry.

As Mr. Torrey mentioned, slander is a civil wrong, not a criminal action, so jail time is not a possibility. However, if you know that the other side has an attorney, it probably is a good idea for you to have an attorney as well.

You should also immediately stop any statements about her, certainly for the time being, as you are only hurting yourself further.

I hope that this information helps, but if you have more questions, want more information, or feel that you need legal representation, please feel free to contact me directly at [email protected]. Best of luck, and Im happy to help you in any way that I can.
