Can a minor (age 12) be sued for slander for statements made at school about another student, and if so, can the parents be held financially responsible for any judgment.

Yes and yes. In most such cases the damages would be relatively minor (no pun intended), but I can imagine scenarios where there might be a lot of money at stake.

Parents are financially responsible for all torts (whether intentional or negligent) committed by their minor children.

Children can be sued just like adults, and the fact that most children have essentially no money isn't a bar because the judgment is payable by the parents.

Parents can be sued, but the situation would have to be very extreme and winnable before any attorney is going to take the plaintiff's case. If you are in SoCal and want to consult with me, if you really think you are about to be sued, then contact me to discuss defense of the case.
