Legal Question in Personal Injury in California

My neighbors are making false calls to the cops & posting it online that my wife & I are supposedly molesting our son & that we beat him. We have called the cops ourselves which they said nothing can be done legally over the threat on FB and to get a restraining order. The cop said that by the time we get a restraining order that our neighbors will be evicted from our landlady. A cop spoke to our son at school today & when we called them they said they are going to do a CPS follow up on Thursday. What can my wife & I legally do as its a crime to falsify information & it's considered slander and libel?

The police aren't likely to do anything about the persons making these false accusations, especially as they are investigating you (they must) and that this investigation isn't over.

You could sue the neighbors for slander, but you can't really shut up a crazy person and since they are tenants, they probably don't have any money you can get from them in a judgment. This means you would be paying for the litigation yourselves, with no likely source of recovery of your damages.
