Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Apartment Rental Issue!!!!

I submitted my rental application and it was rejected, so they told me to get a co-signer. So I did and it was approved a couple days later. My move in date was supposed to be for June 16th, 2007. Two weeks later they call me and said they can't lease the apartment to me due to the fact that I was a convicted felon. I looked on apartmentratings, their ratings were bad. They do house people with felonies, drug dealers, punks, white superemsist, etc. I feel that I was discriminated against because of the fact that I'm Asian. They said it takes only four days for them to do a background check. (My felony was for weapon charges) Two weeks later they somehow changed their minds and told me that they can't rent the apartment out to me. I put a deposit down to hold the place for me until 6/16/2007. Is there anything else I could do besides speaking to the property manager? Any answers would help. The apartment complex is called ''Seacrest Apartment'' (San Clemente)

Re: Apartment Rental Issue!!!!

Go to the local office that monitors housing discrimination and tell them what happened. See if they have a history of improper discrimination. There are some private groups [Project Sentinal in the Bay Area] that looks into such things.

Check with a criminal lawyer if your record can be expunged.
