Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

I broke the lease on my store earlier this year with 11 months remaining. The owners then remodeled it making it impossible to re-lease for seven months due to permits from the city. Do I have to pay the rent for those months?

I'd be somewhat guessing as to what a judge would rule after hearing both sides present their facts, but I'm inclined to think you aren't liable for the rent, or at least most of it, if the projects the owner undertook were truly remodeling, but you are liable if the owner was repairing damage caused by your tenancy, in whole or in part.
