Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Can my landlord remove sometenants from the lease without my knowledge

Is it legal for my landlord to accept a 30 days notice of termination of lease for two of the four tenants on the lease? Myself and the other tenant were not informed that the other two tenants had been removed, and we hae been told we are responsible, (the two remaining tenants) for the next months rent by ourselves. We are also responsible for any damages to the apartment, that were made by the other people, since they are no longer on the lease, they are not legally responisble for anything. Is this true? They lied about why they needed to break the lease, (IN WRITING), and left us with a bill, we really can't afford. Is our lease considered void, since myself and the other tenant never signed to it, agreeing to be the only two tenants on the lease?

It depends on the lease and the agreement you had with the co-lessee's. The lease probably made each tenant liable for the entire lease in case the co-lessee's failed to perform in legal terms this is called joint and several liability. You have to read your lease. Secondly you may have a remedy against your co-lessee's for breach of contract if you are liable for their non-performance.
