Legal Question in Tax Law in California

My ex wife filed a married filing jointly tax return without my consent. I moved out of country after we broke up ( i did not have completed green card) and never received notice about this after apparently an issue arouse. She filed innocent spouse and left me with tax liability. It is now 10 years later and i moved back to states with new wife who is also american and surprise there is a majorly incorrect tax bill with my name on it 30,000 plus. IRS won't produce any documents except a crazy wrong transcript of that tax year not the original return or any letters they sent etc... they say it is all to old and that they don't have to have them anymore. Without those documents I can not prove that I did not sign these returns etc... so how can I be held accountable. Don't they need the burden of proof, is a transcript really burden of proof.

you should retain a tax attorney to represent you regarding the incorrect tax bill. it may also be necessary to file an action for fraud against your ex wife.
