Legal Question in Traffic Law in California

I sold my car Mersedez Benz 300e 1993 for $1700, without the smog certificate. The buyer took it "As is" but it wasnt on a written letter only verbal. I told him that the shouldn't have major problems. Now he sends me a letter after 2 months telling me that the car didn't pass the smog and he already spended more than what the car was sold for. I spoke to him today and he is charging me $1700 for cost of the car because he doesnt want it. Also, 1000 for paint, 108 dollars for labor used to check what the car will need to get fix. $54 for new key, $50 for electrical problems even change oil and $328 for registration and few others. My concern with this is that he spended a lot of money car without notifying me these major problems and he wants me to pay him $3638 withing 5 days. I know I told him that there shouldnt be a major problem with the car but He spended a lot of money fixing things that he knew he had to fix. For instance, the paint job. Now I was selling the car $2500. I lowered it because I knew that there will be small things to get fix. I am very frustrated and I need a professional advice. If any attorney is willing to give a free advice as far as am I really responsible for all Costs? or how can I deal with this problem. please answer

You, the seller, have to smog. If it doesn't pass, take the car back and give him $1700.
