Legal Question in Traffic Law in California

My son who is 19, was a passanger in a vehicle that was stopped for speeding, and the driver got a ticket, and the California Highway Patrol asked and serched the vehicle and found a bottle of achohol, they asked who it belonged to , and my son told them he took the bottle for his Mother's house and it was his. The office issued my son a citation for possession of Achohol, does he have any defense, and does he need legal assistance to keep from losing his License, or is it automatic. This inncident happened to Yolo county California.
