after a person has died how long should it be before the people in a will should get an accounting of whats in the will

Unless and until someone assumes responsibility as executor or administrator of the estate and proceeds with a probate proceeding, if required, or obtains possession of the assets of the estate, no accounting will ever occur.

How long it takes to administer an estate is wholly dependent on what is in the estate - i.e. what type of assets need to be dealt with. It can take anywhere from as little as six to nine months to as long as several years or more. It all depends on what assets and other issues have to be dealt with.
