I have heard the word WCAB number mentioned a number of times. What does it mean?

A WCAB number is....

The Workers Compensation Appeal Board number (WCAB number) is the case number assigned to each industrial appeal. It is the Board's reference number and appeals are filed by this number. The number is used to identify the case with the WCAB. For SDI payment purposes, it is not required that you have a case number.
