Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Colorado

question about confidentiality

A collection agency talked to my current husband about an account from 14 years ago, that I had with my ex-husband with out my permission, is that legal? This company never asked to speak to me personally.

Re: question about confidentiality

The collection agency didn't necessarily have reason to believe that your current husband was not also a debtor on this alleged debt. I would be more concerned about the fact that they are trying to collect on a debt that is probably time barred and possibly putting it on your credit rating.

I would send them a certified letter telling them that you dispute the debt and instructing them not to contact you about this debt ever again. After that, I would carefully document any further contact from the collection, including dates, times and persons who contacted you. Furthermore, I would get a copy of your credit report and dispute any negative entries related to this debt.
