can my shoplifting chatges be dismissed?

I was arrested for shoplifting, I am 26. It was the first time I have ever been arrested. How can I guarantee that this will not show up on my background check?

First, does it appear on your record? Find out by doing a background check on yourself. (search is $5 through CBI). If it does show up, get it sealed if eligible. If not eligible, disclose it voluntarily. If it is recent, how recent? Trial or Guilty plea? Probation? Deferred? What court?
