What is my responsibility to accept employment by verbal agreement when the starting date for employment was not given by the employer prior to job offer and a contract has not been issued?

Re: Verbal agreement and uninformed employment start date

Assuming there is no state statute that regulates the issue (and there usually isn't), an offer of employment should be accepted in order to form a contract. The acceptance usually can be oral or written unless the offer required it to be written. If an offer for employment is not accepted, the person doing the offering can generally withdraw the offer. If there is confusion about the start date, it needs to be clarified. If a person has relied upon a job offer to his detriment, then the employer might be obligated to allow the employee to take the job. Usually, a starting date is not so critical that the employee has to start on that very date. This information is for general background and is not intended to provide legal advice. If you have an actual situation, you should contact a competent attorney who can take your case on an hourly rate or contingent fee basis.
