Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in District of Columbia

Lawsuit Filed

I was served a summons today from a credit union for debt from 1996. The lawyer has requested $800 plus attorney's fees and the pretrial is set for 12/12/03. Is it worth my while to try n settle out of court. We do not have any $ to hire an attorney, our house n cars are in my husband's name only and this credit card debt is mine alone. I am willing to settle for whatever we can scrounge up to avoid court. Any thoughts???

Re: Lawsuit Filed

The statute of limitations in Maryland for most contracts is 3 years, so the statute of limitations on their claim against you may have run out already. That could be a defense for you.
