You would sign the petition, file it and have your spouse served with the papers. They would then have 20 days to file a response with the court or face a default judgment against them.

Just to add: if the matter is just a divorce, it will be granted. Any other issues, ie child support, visitation etc. will be held in abeyance until you can get a response. However, there are ways to perfect that as well.
