If I contract a graphic artist to create a character or design for a specific project, does the created material automatically become my property?

Generally, work created by a graphic artist for you becomes your property. However, you should enter into a work-for-hire agreement with the graphic artist to ensure that all of the rights to the character or design are yours to own and exploit. An experienced intellectual property attorney can assist you with this.
