As a Franchise Attorney I can't believe this happened - handing over $17,500 without a contract or consulting an attorney. Unless you can get him to refund your money, you will have to sue him, hopefully win and then hopefully be able to collect on the judgment. You could have spent a couple hundred up front with good legal advice. Now, you're looking at spending well over $10k, unless of course the person settles early on. Consult with a good business or franchise attorney in your area for specific advice.

You will probably have to sue him and obtain a judgment. Hope he has assets to collect from.
