Legal Question in Business Law in Florida

I quit my job last week, (doctors office /check in) and when i called today to let her know I would be picking up my check tomarrow, so she wouldnt mail it, she told me I had to sign some papers without my friend who is coming with me, I dont want to be in a closed office with my exboss, i dont trust her. before i could get my check, and if I was out of the area she would have to hold onto my check until i could come sign them. I dont have anything that belongs to them. Am I required by florida law to sign something or I wont get my check?

Have your attorney not your friend, your LAWYER look over the papers your ex-boss wants signed BEFORE you sign them.

Some companies do require that papers be signed before final bonus payment is given, but they owe you the final payment for your work performed whether you sign or not. This final bonus payment often depends on the circumstances under which you leave (for example, while I was in law school, I was laid off from a job when I was over 40 years old; I had to sign papers that said I would go quietly away and give up any age-discrimination claim I may have had before they would pay me a good-sized bonus, which was fine), and those circumstances should be spelled out in your employment contract. By all means, go to the exit interview (bring your LAWYER, not your friend; your ex-boss cannot refuse to let your lawyer sit in on the interview with you), but, even if you don't bring your lawyer, DO NOT sign anything until your lawyer gets a look at the paperwork.
