Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

I am a 19 year old. I was in an auto accident, at which I was at fault, while my insurance coverage has lapsed. I made an illegal turn, however I did not receive a ticket. I was not allowed to photograph the other individuals vehicle. Four months later, I have received a statement from the other individual's insurance company. The letter states that they are seeking 100% compensation for the loss. The amount that they are seeking is well beyond my means of obtaining. I am a college student without any time for a job. I live with my parents. The car and prior insurance coverage was all in my name. Is there any way I could get the amount reduced to a reasonable means?

You could hire a lawyer to assess the situation and try to negotiate. You could also look into bankruptcy.

If you were at fault in the accident, then you are responsible for paying the damage to the other person's car. It is not clear from your question whether they are just claiming reimbursement for the property damage to the car, or if there were injuries involved.

The other driver's insurance company may sue you to recover the money it paid to the other driver. If they obtain a judgment against you in that case, then your driver's license may be suspended.

You could try to work out a payment plan with the insurance company. However, if that does not work, then bankruptcy may be a good option for you. That would probably wipe out the debt entirely.

You should seek out an attorney immediately. If a lawsuit has been filed you have 20 days to file an Answer or the other insurance company can obtain a default judgment. I strongly recommend not communicating with the other insurance company or anyone associated with them until you speak to an attorney. An attorney may be able to negotiate a settlement for you.
