Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

Hospital is billing me when I have already paid in full

I owed money to a local hospital, and it went into collections while I was unemployed and unable to pay. In March 2004, I had the hospital's billing department research what exactly I owed, and I paid that amount. I have a letter from the hospital stating that my account (and that on my family members) was paid in full. I checked my credit report on 5/26 and found out there is still $1000 owed from a seperate account from two years ago, which I did not know existed. I called the hospital about it, and they told me I had to pay it, even though they had mistakenly created a second account and did not include it in the original amount. I have already paid the hospital $3000, originally, and now they want another $1000. Should I pay it, or should the hospital eat it because the error was due to their sloppy accounting?

Thanks

The ethical determination is yours to make. It is not necessarily the same as a legal decision.
