Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

I paid for online schooling in medical transcription at thevlc.com. I made three payments for my tuition, books, and support through my graduation. I made the pmnts. in Dec. 08, Jan 09 and Feb. 09 the total is $1949.90. The school has now shut down with no notice. The website redirects to another site saying it has been sold but the school is closing. No phones work either, disconncted. My question is how do I go about getting my money back if possible. There are also about thiry other students I have found in the same boat as me. The school was in Niagara Falls NY, and Hamilton, ON Canada.

I would start with the easiest thing I can think of first which is to file a complaint with the Florida Attorney General. (www.myfloridalegal.com)

You should also consult with a NY attorney to determine if this business is/was registered in NY. A class action suit may be possible if and where this entity can be found.

As this may be an international matter, the US Attorney General may also be interested. But, I would start with the FL AG's office and let them direct you from there.

Hope that helps.

In addition to the previous response, I strongly recommend you immediately consult with a bankruptcy attorney in your area. If the school filed bankruptcy you will want to get on the creditor list as quickly as possible.
